The majority of modern vehicles have an immobilizer system. If you don't own the original key to the car, you will not be able start it.

Keyless Entry System

Keyless entry systems make your car easier to drive, and can help you feel more secure. It allows you to open doors and start the motor without having to look for keys. The system uses radio frequencies to connect the key fobs to the car's receiver. The process is quite simple and doesn't require any special equipment or past experience.

When you press the button on your key fob, it sends a 40-bit message to a receiver inside your vehicle. The receiver matches that code with a function code, which will tell it what to do, like unlocking the doors or opening the windows. The system is also designed to keep other people from using your key fob to open your car, since each transmitter is unique in code.

Modern cars are equipped with systems that automatically lock your vehicle when you leave. This is a great feature when you are prone forgetting things or worried about leaving your vehicle unattended. These systems do not come without their weaknesses. For example, thieves can hack into these systems.

There are a variety of issues that can cause your keyless entry device and remote starter to fail to perform properly. A dead battery in your fob is the most frequent problem. If this is the case, try replacing the battery in your fob. If that doesn't work, you may have to program your device.

Keyless Start System

With this technology, drivers can start their engines without having insert a mechanical key. The fob instead transmits an access key to the console, that unlocks a set electrical switches and starts the engine. Once the engine is started, the fob's button can be pressed to shut it off.

The system comes with safeguards that prevent the car from starting unintentionally in gear when no one is near the steering wheel. Its computer monitors to make sure the transmission is in park and that the brake pedal is pulled down before it can start the engine, and it can also be programmed to require a particular sequence of press-button presses before the motor will start.

This system is very effective at deterring most carjackers, though it does not protect against the more technologically-advanced thieves. In a recent study, security researcher Bokslag was able hack the Immobilizer in three vehicles of popular brands within ten second of obtaining the keys.

The majority of older cars use an older, less reliable version of this system, with a single permanent personal code and a revolving second code that's read every time the key is switched on. Newer vehicles use an advanced, electronically-controlled Engine Immobilizer system that features two-tier security.

It also requires the Workshop Code and Importer number.
